Read Me A Memory

Each spring our town's branch of the Toledo-Lucas County Public library hosts a day long festival entitled "Claire's Day" It is a day to celebrate the love of reading and it is held in memory of a little girl named Claire Rubini who, incidently, went to the elementary school where my own children attend. Claire had a deep love for reading and sadly, she passed away suddenly in the summer of 2000. Her family, along with other local residents and business owners founded Claire's Day. Authors and illustrators, local musicians and choir's, etc. gather for a day of celebration. While cleaning my daughter's closet out today, I came across the lyrics of a song that their school sang at last year's Claire's Day. Of course, you have to hear the sweet little tune that accompanies it to get the full effect but I think the lyrics alone remind us of how quickly childhood passes and to cherish every moment we have while our children are little. Here are the lyrics of which I don't know the author.

"Read me a mem'ry, tell me a tale.
Speak of wondrous adventures, together we'll sail
Off to forests enchanted and lands far away,
Fairies and kings, and magical rings.
My heart has wings.....
When I sit at your knee and you read to me.

Years turn like pages, soon I'll be grown.
Maybe someday I'll read to a child of my own.
Though I may not remember the stories we shared.
I always knew through the time spent with you

That you loved me too...
For I sat at your knee and you read to me.

Childhood, like summer days; dews on the grass
Soon will be yesterdays
Don't let it pass 'til you....

Read me a mem'ry, tell me a tale.
Speak of wondrous adventures, together we'll sail
Off to forests enchanted and lands far away,
Fairies and kings and magical rings.
My heart has wings....
when I sit at your knee and you read to me."

Quote of the Day- “The whole world opened to me when I learned to read.” -Mary McLeod Bethune
